MACHTELD ABOUT / DICHT OP DE HUID / CLOSE TO THE SKIN / Sinds mijn opleiding tot edelsmid ben ik gefascineerd door de folklore van diverse culturen en dan met name klederdracht en andere vormen van handwerk. De sieraden, borduurmotieven en ornamentiek in bijvoorbeeld de architectuur kunnen zeer verassend en expressief zijn. Deze ‘volkstaal’ van geometrische composities en symbolen in ornamenten heeft door de tijd heen geen betekenis verloren. We herkennen het en de vormen spreken in hun vertrouwde voorkomen rechtstreeks tot onze verbeelding. Als je me vraagt wat kenmerkend is voor mijn werk, dan is het misschien dat ik graag speel met het platte vlak. Mijn sieraden liggen dicht op de huid. De diepte zit ‘m in de keuze en de bewerking van het materiaal, de combinatie van ornamenten en de symboliek hiervan. Dit vind je terug in mijn sieraad collecties, evenals mijn zoektocht naar dat ene contrast dat het spannend maakt. Ever since my training as a jewellery maker I have been fascinated by the folklore of various cultures, specifically clothing and other forms of handycraft. The jewelry, embroidery patterns en ornaments in for instance architecture can be very imaginative and expressive. This language of geometric designs and symbols in ornaments has not devalued through time. Within its familiar presence the shapes trigger our imagination, not in the least because their origin lies in nature itself. If you ask me what is characteristic for my work it could be that I like to play around with the flat surface. My Jewellery lies close to the skin. The content comes from the choice in and handling of the material, the combination of ornament and the symbolism.
